I like meat. I eat most of it- beef, chicken, lamb, pork, fish and turkey all find their ways into my meals each week. I realize that a diet heavy in high fat meats can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease, so I limit our intake of it to about once a week. However, in my house each dinner meal includes one of those meats I listed above.
In an effort to branch out and try new things, I thought I would try to go vegetarian for a week. Since this affects my husband as well (G-love is already a vegetarian since he is a mere 9 months old) I asked him if he would be up for a week of meatless-ness. He was enthusiastically game. He actually suggested trying a vegan diet- but I was not so keen. The thought of a day without cheese seems torturous. Vegetarianism I can do. I think.
So, off to the computer I went to find out just what I was getting us into. My husband and I figured we needed to have some basic rules for this. I settled for us going on a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet- which is no meat but allows for dairy like milk, butter, cheese and eggs. Maybe you think I am being weak by not giving it all up- but it’s my challenge. Let’s see how this next week goes and from there I may consider cutting out even more.
I just want to put it out there- I am in no way doing this to lose weight or make a point about anything. I am simply interested in challenging myself to come up with a weeks worth of vegetarian or meat-less meals and do something I have never done before. I was also trying to think of fun blog ideas and came up with this. I figure I can blog about how it is going as well as post a few recipes that we try if they taste good.
We are going to start on Sunday and go for a week. Believe me when I say that this will be a challenge. I am excited to branch out and try some new meal ideas. Whether I’ll break out the tofu is still to be determined. Are there any vegetarians out there? Any meal/recipe ideas you can share?
